Importance of balancing the pH of Hair

scale

Understanding hair pH balance is first thing we learn at hairdressing school in Japan.

I’m writing about what is pH, and what does it have to do with hair.

1. What is pH?

pH is a measurement of how acidic or alkaline a substance is.

The scale is between zero to fourteen.

Anything below 7.0 is acidic. 7.0 is considered to be neutral. Anything above 7.0 is alkaline.

When pH of hair is slightly acidic which is between 4.5 and 5.5 is said to be the best for hair where the hair condition is most stable and balanced.

2. Why does pH matter in colouring?

Permanent colour usually contains pH range from 8.0 to as high as 11.0 which is higher alkaline perm or alkaline straight perm which pH range is from 8.5 to 9.5.

When the hair is in alkaline range, it opens up cuticles. It stimulates the colour work.

Hair pH needs to be balanced after colour because when the hair is balanced(pH4.5 to 5.5), it means cuticle is sealed and it locks the colour in. It avoids pigment quickly fades off.

3. pH balancing deep treatment

What is the difference between home care treatment and salon care treatment?

Biggest difference would be whether it repairs from inside of the hair or just coats the hair surface.

I am showing how I do treatment at my salon using alkaline “Alcali”, acidic “Acid”, apple stem cell treatment “Agea Lotion”.

Step1: Apply ‘Alcali’

Removing silicone and product build up with ‘Alcali’, the amino acid based alkaline product.

step2: Shampoo

Rinse the ‘Alcali’ well and give a good shampoo.

Step3: Apply apply stem cell treatment

agea lotion

Apply Malus Domestica Fruit Cell Culture Extract, ‘Agea Lotion’.

Protects skin stem cells while also delaying the essence of hair follicles.

Step 4: Apply ‘Acid’

Apply amino acid based acidic product ‘Acid’

Step 5: Apply 4 step treatment

I recommend all the people to put the treatment component inside of the hair cuticles in the process of balancing pH.

Whether you do chemical or not, leaving cuticles closed and healthy is something you would start focusing on to take care of your hair.

Remember if your hair is too alkaline, it will cause the hair cuticle to open, and if your hair is too acidic, cuticle will contract.

Using a good shampoo and conditioner at home and doing a salon treatment every time you go to hair salon might be able to change your hair condition dramatically.
